As part of ongoing efforts to provide much needed humanitarian assistance to flood-stricken families under uMkhanyakude District Municipality, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu will today visit the Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality .
The October floods left a trail of destruction to property and infrastructure, with over 600 households across the province left damaged, including over 130 houses destroyed in Somkhele and KwaMyeki in Mtubatuba .
Some of the houses were completely damaged, leaving families homeless .
Residents also lost livestock, including goats, chickens and cows .
The department said the provision of humanitarian assistance is supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which is collaborating with Social Development and Action Development to render humanitarian assistance and sustainable livelihoods initiatives .
These initiatives are aimed particularly at people with disabilities, child-headed households and older persons .
“With the festive season upon us, this generous donation by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is timely and will assist many of the flood-stricken families who lost everything during the disaster to put food on the table this Christmas as they recover and rebuild their lives,” Zulu said .
The handing over of humanitarian assistance will take place at Ward 15 Mahujini Community Hall, in Mtubatuba .
