…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. Allegations of voter intimidation and interference were presented before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal by one of the witnesses called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The witness, Abiye Sekibo, who served as the PDP Coordinator during the February 25 presidential election in Rivers State, claimed that agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) disrupted the electronic transmission of election results in the state.
According to Sekibo, the APC agents obstructed the use of the Bimodal Voters’ Accreditation System (BVAS) by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials.
This system is crucial for uploading the results collected from polling units across the state.
Sekibo informed the court that INEC presiding officers were prevented from uploading the results of the presidential election in Rivers by agents of the APC and its leader, Mr. Tinubu.
Under cross-examination by Akin Olujinmi, counsel to Mr. Tinubu, Sekibo confirmed that he personally voted at his polling unit in Okrika Local Government Area.
In further cross-examination by Lateef Fagbemi, counsel to the APC, Sekibo was questioned about how he identified the agents as being affiliated with the APC.
Sekibo explained that he witnessed the collation of several results in 20 out of the over 600 polling units in the state. He deduced the identities of the agents based on their violent actions during the process.
Additionally, Sekibo mentioned that attempts to reach Obiakpor local government area were impeded due to violence and loss of lives.
Abiye Sekibo, the seventh witness called by Atiku Abubakar, testified before the panel chaired by Haruna Tsammani.
The allegations raised serious concerns about the conduct of the presidential election in Rivers State, particularly regarding the actions of the APC agents and their impact on the electronic transmission of results.
The tribunal will continue to assess the evidence presented and evaluate its implications for the electoral process.
