The Chidi Ibeh-led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has responded to recent statements made by Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, accusing him of instigating a religious war in Nigeria.
Gumi’s comments targeted Christians and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Gumi’s Controversial Statements
Sheikh Ahmed Gumi expressed concern about entrusting Nigeria’s national security to Christians and Southerners.
He criticized Minister Nyesom Wike for receiving the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria and planning to collaborate with Israel on security matters in Abuja.
Gumi also raised the issue of bearded Muslims in the city, warning they might be labeled as Osama Bin Laden and killed.
Ohanaeze’s Response
Ohanaeze, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has strongly criticized Gumi’s statements, considering them dangerous and a threat to religious freedom and inclusivity.
They call for relevant authorities to arrest Gumi, stating that his words pose a grave threat to national security and social cohesion.
Defending Religious Freedom
Ohanaeze emphasizes that Nigeria is a multicultural society where all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations, deserve equal rights and opportunities.
They firmly denounce divisive rhetoric that undermines the principles of religious freedom.
Commendation for Unity
Isiguzoro also commends the appointment of Wike, a Christian, as Minister of the FCT by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
They believe this collaboration represents unity and progress, which Nigeria needs to overcome challenges and build a prosperous future for all its citizens.
