In a heartbreaking incident at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, a 39-year-old mother-of-two tragically passed away after being found unconscious while waiting to see a doctor for a persistent headache.
The incident occurred on January 19, and despite being observed by nurses three times during her seven-hour wait, the woman’s condition deteriorated unnoticed until it was too late.
Hospital’s Response and Ongoing Investigation:
Upon her name being called, the patient failed to respond, leading hospital staff to initially assume she had left due to the prolonged wait.
Unfortunately, she was later discovered unresponsive under a coat in a waiting room chair. She was promptly rushed to intensive care, where she succumbed to her condition on January 22.
Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), which operates the medical center, has initiated an investigation into the tragic incident.
Dr. Keith Girling, Medical Director at NUH Trust, expressed condolences to the family and emphasized the commencement of a thorough investigation, involving the family in the process.
Concerns Over A&E Wait Times:
Former NHS trust chairman Roy Lilley, commenting on the case, suggested that the incident might be elevated to an internal inquiry due to its severity.
Reports indicate that wait times at the A&E department can extend up to 14 hours, with queues comprising up to 80 patients.
This tragic event raises concerns about the impact of prolonged waiting periods on patient outcomes and underscores the need for an in-depth examination of existing protocols and resource allocations.
National Trends Reflect Challenges:
Recent figures released regarding A&E wait times in England revealed a significant increase of almost 25 percent in the number of patients waiting more than 12 hours to be seen.
This data emphasizes a broader challenge within the healthcare system, urging a closer examination of the factors contributing to delays in patient care and potential solutions to enhance overall efficiency.
Medical Director’s Condolences and Commitment to Investigation:
Dr. Keith Girling reiterated his condolences to the grieving family and assured a comprehensive investigation involving their active participation.
Until the investigation is concluded, the medical center refrains from further comments.
The incident sheds light on the critical need for ongoing efforts to improve A&E services, address wait time issues, and ensure the safety and well-being of patients seeking urgent medical attention.
