Paramedics in KwaZulu-Natal arrived on the scene in the Stanger area to find that the boy had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
It appears that two teenage boys were playing with a firearm when it accidentally discharged, killing one of them.
The second boy sustained no injuries.
The police are investigating the incident as a case of murder and have recovered the gun.
The families of two 16-year-old pupils from Lesiba Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, have revealed that one of the boys shot his best friend before turning the gun on himself.
The first death was a result of an accidental gun mistake, while the second death occurred due to fear and panic, according to Sibusiso Nkabane, who is representing the families.
The provincial education department initially reported that the shooting was the result of an argument between the families.
However, it was later revealed that the three boys, who had been best friends for a few years, had bunked during break on their first day back at school.
