Socialite Seeks Support for Unjustly Jailed Individuals
Donald Trump reportedly declined Kim Kardashian’s request for his endorsement in advocating for clemencies for individuals she believed were wrongly imprisoned.
A new book by ABC News’ Johnathan Karl, titled Tired of Winning, sheds light on the call where Trump rejected the socialite’s plea, assuming she had voted for Joe Biden in 2020.
Background: Trump’s Previous Clemency Grant at Kardashian’s Request
In 2018, Kardashian met with Trump in the Oval Office, advocating for the pardon of Alice Johnson, serving a life sentence on drug charges.
Despite Kardashian’s efforts, Trump wanted her to utilize her celebrity influence to bring football stars to the White House, a request that proved unsuccessful.
Failed Quid Pro Quo: Trump’s Demands
According to Karl’s book, Trump demanded a quid pro quo, linking clemency grants to Kardashian leveraging her connections to bring football stars to visit him at the White House.
Despite Kardashian’s attempts, the players declined, considering Trump too toxic, especially in the final weeks of his presidency.
Alice Johnson’s Clemency: A Past Success
While Kardashian’s efforts to bring football players to the White House failed, Trump did grant clemency to Alice Johnson in 2018, commuting her sentence for a first-time drug offense after over 20 years in prison. Subsequently, he signed a full pardon for Johnson in August 2020.
Post-Presidential Call: Trump Hangs Up on Kardashian
Months after leaving office, Kardashian contacted Trump seeking his endorsement for another clemency case.
However, Trump, less receptive this time, declined, referencing Kardashian’s alleged vote for Biden in 2020. The call ended abruptly, with Trump hanging up on the socialite.
Trump’s Response to Book Contents
In response to the book’s contents, a spokesperson for Trump criticized Johnathan Karl, calling him “disgraceful and talentless.” The spokesperson dismissed the book as fiction and reiterated that previously released excerpts had been debunked.
