Protest Erupts at Wuse Market, Abuja, Over Inflated Shop Prices and Eviction Threats

Discontent Among Wuse Market Vendors

Vendors and shop owners at Wuse Market, Abuja, are expressing anger and frustration over the controversial sale of premium stalls and shops, following eviction notices served by the Abuja Investment and Property Development Company (AIPDC).

Petition and Complaints to the FCT Minister

In response to the sudden sale, affected businessmen have lodged a formal petition to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), seeking immediate intervention.

They strongly contest the arbitrary increase in shop prices to N60 million each, considering it an exorbitant and unacceptable amount.

Unauthorized Sale and Market Management Issues

Investigations conducted by the Global Information Team (GIT) revealed that the AIPDC initiated the sale without consulting the Abuja Market Management Limited (AMML), the typical governing body for markets in the Federal Capital Territory.

This move has raised concerns about the credibility of the AMML.

Call for Ministerial Intervention

Anabel Crown, head of GIT’s intelligence desk, highlighted the detrimental impact of the AIPDC’s actions on the AMML’s reputation.

Crown urged Minister Wike, recently involved in resolving an AMML crisis, to empower the AMML to oversee Wuse Market affairs, seeking to rectify the situation.

Uncertainty and Concern Among Traders

The sudden eviction notices and sale, occurring during a period of market stability, have left traders shocked and worried.

They fear that the new owners might significantly hike shop prices, posing a threat to their businesses and livelihoods.

Hope for Government Intervention

Traders have submitted applications to various authorities, including the FCT Minister, the FCT government, the National Human Rights Commission, and the EFCC, expressing faith in the government’s intervention to ensure justice and fair treatment.

The situation at Wuse Market reflects a growing discontent among vendors, raising concerns about the process of shop sale and eviction, and calling for swift governmental intervention to address the grievances raised by the affected traders.
