Former head of Britain’s Royal Navy, Admiral Lord Alan West, has condemned Margaritis Schinas, a vice-president of the European Commission, for his recent comments asserting that ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’.
Amidst critical negotiations between the UK and Spain over the future of Gibraltar, Schinas’ remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Admiral West, who accuses him of ‘grandstanding’ and undermining diplomatic efforts.
Gibraltar’s Status Subject to Ongoing Talks
The status of Gibraltar has been a subject of ongoing negotiations between Britain and Spain since the UK’s departure from the EU.
Issues such as jurisdiction over Gibraltar’s airport, border management, and sovereignty remain contentious points of discussion, with both sides seeking a mutually acceptable resolution.
Spain’s Response and Joint Criticism
Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, has rebuked Schinas’ remarks, labeling them as ‘very unfortunate and incomprehensible’.
Alongside Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission vice-president leading the Gibraltar talks, Albares issued a joint statement criticizing Schinas’ comments and reaffirming the progress of negotiations between the EU and the UK.
UK’s Stance and Continued Talks
In response to Spain’s concerns and Schinas’ remarks, UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is set to meet with Albares and Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s chief minister, in Brussels next week to continue negotiations.
The discussions aim to address the complexities surrounding Gibraltar’s post-Brexit status and ensure the smooth functioning of travel and trade in the region.
Navigating Diplomatic Challenges
As diplomatic tensions persist and negotiations unfold, all parties involved recognize the importance of finding common ground and resolving outstanding issues in a manner that respects the interests and sovereignty of Gibraltar and its residents.
The road ahead remains challenging, but continued dialogue and cooperation are essential to reaching a sustainable and mutually beneficial agreement.
