Tajikistani Judoka Nurali Emomali Experiences Instant Karma in Paris After Refusing Handshake with Israeli Opponent

At the recent Olympic Games in Paris, a judo match became the talk of the event for reasons beyond the sport itself.

The competition saw an unexpected turn of events involving Tajikistani judoka Nurali Emomali and his Israeli opponent, Baruch Shmailov.

The controversy began when Emomali, after defeating Shmailov, chose not to follow the customary tradition of shaking hands with his opponent.

Instead, he walked off the mat, allegedly shouting “Allah Akbar.”

This act of refusal followed a similar incident earlier in the day, where Morocco’s Abderrahmane Boushita also declined to shake hands with Shmailov.

Emomali’s decision not to engage in the customary handshake led to what many spectators and social media users described as “instant karma.” In his next match against Japan’s Hifumi Abe, Emomali suffered a severe injury to his left arm, possibly dislocating his shoulder.

The injury left him in tears on the mat, sparking a wave of online commentary linking his misfortune to his earlier actions.

Security Concerns for Israeli Athletes

The incident occurred against a backdrop of heightened security concerns for Israeli athletes at the Games.

Earlier that day, French police launched an investigation into death threats received by three Israeli athletes.

Anti-cybercrime units were also active, addressing the spread of athletes’ personal information on social media, allegedly orchestrated by Iranian hackers.

International Reactions

In response to the threats, Israel’s National Cyber Directorate and foreign ministry raised alarms about potential threats to Israeli athletes and tourists, possibly backed by Iranian elements.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations, however, denied any involvement, condemning acts of terrorism. Meanwhile, Israeli athletes are being provided with round-the-clock protection, escorted by elite tactical units and supported by Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet.

The situation highlights the complex interplay of sportsmanship, international politics, and security at a global event like the Olympics.
