…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, recently expressed his belief that only the guilty suspects are scared of the anti-graft agency.
In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Bawa emphasized that the EFCC’s intention is not to induce panic or fear, but rather to encourage individuals to come forward and cooperate with the commission.
The EFCC’s Objective and Call for Cooperation:
Bawa clarified that the EFCC’s primary objective is to uncover the truth and establish the facts surrounding cases of corruption.
He urged individuals to approach the commission with a sense of belonging and without apprehension.
Bawa questioned the reasons behind fear and anxiety, suggesting that such emotions might indicate guilt rather than innocence.
Suspension and Arrest of Abdulrasheed Bawa:
President Bola Tinubu suspended Abdulrasheed Bawa following serious allegations of abuse of office.
The President aimed to ensure a thorough investigation into these weighty allegations.
Consequently, Bawa was instructed to hand over the responsibilities of his position to the Director of Operations at the EFCC until the investigation concludes.
It is worth noting that the interview with Chude Jideonwo occurred before Bawa’s suspension and subsequent arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Transition of Leadership:
As a result of Abdulrasheed Bawa’s removal, Abdulkarim Chukkol assumed the position of the acting head of the EFCC.
Chukkol will oversee the affairs of the anti-graft agency while the investigation into Bawa’s alleged misconduct is ongoing.
