Imagine driving down a busy street when suddenly, a small child in just a diaper and tank top darts into the intersection. This heart-stopping moment was captured on dashcam footage from a residential area in Staten Island, New York, on June 19.
The child, holding an iPad, was seen running into the middle of the road, with cars speeding by.
Fortunately, Peter Warner, a quick-thinking bus driver for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was on the scene. He stopped his bus in the intersection, blocking traffic to protect the child.
The footage shows Warner stepping out of his vehicle and gently picking up the toddler.
Warner, a father of two, attempted to use the child’s iPad to contact his parents, but the device was restricted. He even tried to walk with the child, hoping he might lead them to his home, but it didn’t work.
Meanwhile, the police circled the area, searching for any distressed parents, but they couldn’t find anyone.
A Safe Resolution
For 45 minutes, Warner stayed with the child, eventually bringing him onto the bus to wait for help.
A good Samaritan outside directed traffic around the stopped vehicle.
The situation ended safely when an NYPD car arrived, and officers took the boy to a local precinct. The touching moment when the child hugged Warner was captured by a bus passenger.
Reuniting with Family
About an hour later, the child’s parents arrived at the precinct to pick him up. It turned out the boy had wandered off while his father was asleep and his mother was at work.
He was found four blocks from home. Warner later recounted how the boy’s mother was incredibly grateful, even giving him a big hug. They have since stayed in touch, connecting on social media.
Acknowledging Warner’s Actions
Daniel Casella, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 726, praised Warner’s actions, highlighting the everyday efforts of bus drivers that often go unnoticed.
He expressed relief that Warner’s quick response prevented a potential tragedy, calling it a “miracle” that the child was unharmed.
