DA’s Call for Suspension of SAFA President and CFO

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has initiated a petition demanding the immediate suspension of South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan and SAFA Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Gronie Hluyo.

The call for suspension comes in the wake of ongoing criminal investigations involving the SAFA leadership.

DA’s Concerns and Detailed Audit Report

Tsepo Mhlongo MP, DA Shadow Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, has highlighted the party’s concerns regarding financial mismanagement and potential corruption within SAFA.

These concerns have been reinforced by a highly detailed audit report.

Public Support for the Petition

The DA’s petition has garnered support from over 10,000 concerned citizens who have signed the document.

The petition aims to prompt Parliament to launch an independent forensic investigation into the financial affairs of SAFA and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust.

Funds Received by the Legacy Trust

Mhlongo explained that the 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust, established in 2011 with a $100-million pledge from FIFA, was intended to serve as a self-sustaining source of funding for football development.

The Trust received around R450 million in 2011 and 2012, with the goal of utilizing the generated interest to finance football development programs.

Mismanagement of Trust Funds

The DA has raised concerns about the alleged mismanagement of the Legacy Trust’s funds. Over the years, the Trust received approximately R160 million in interest but disbursed nearly R547 million in grants.

Furthermore, discussions about winding up the trust began in February 2018 due to its near-depleted state.

By the end of 2021, less than R5 million remained, purportedly used to “wind up the trust,” raising questions about the whereabouts of the funds.

Urgent Action Required

Mhlongo has called upon the Honourable Speaker of Parliament to take swift action to prevent further deterioration within SAFA.

The situation is evolving, and further developments are expected as investigations progress.
