When Sophie Winkleman tied the knot with Lord Frederick Windsor, she was so determined to avoid the ‘bridezilla’ stereotype that she didn’t put much thought into her hairstyle. This led to what she describes as a ‘disgusting’ hairdo on her wedding day.
In a candid interview with Tatler, Sophie, who became Lady Frederick Windsor on September 12, 2009, looked back on her wedding day with humor. She admitted that her hair was the first thing she mentioned to her groom as she walked down the aisle.
Instead of offering comfort, Lord Frederick—who is the son of Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin, Prince Michael of Kent—couldn’t help but question her choice.
Wedding Day Reflections
Sophie recalled, “I was so determined not to be a bridezilla that I didn’t even plan my hairstyle. I can’t even tell you how awful it looked.” She continued, “The first thing I said to Freddie when I saw him was, ‘I’m so sorry about the hair.’
He replied, ‘Yes, what on earth have you done?’” Despite her personal critique, Sophie looked stunning to those around her at their wedding at Hampton Court Palace.
Sophie met her husband 17 years ago during a New Year’s Eve outing in Soho. At their wedding, which was organized largely by her mother-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, Sophie had minimal input.
She recalled, “I didn’t know anyone at my wedding except my best friends; the rest were faces I’d never seen before.”
The dress she wore was a sequined silk gown with a sweetheart neckline and a three-meter train by Anna Bystrova of Roza Couture, one of her mother-in-law’s favorite designers. At the reception, her friend Bryan Adams performed ‘Heaven’ for their first dance.
Parenting Challenges
Reflecting on her life as a mother, Sophie, who has two daughters, Isabella, 8, and Maud, 10, shared, “I didn’t realize before having kids that I have the authority of a goldfish. I say ‘no’ and they just laugh.” Despite the challenges, she has managed to keep smartphones out of her daughters’ hands.
Support from the Royal Family
In November 2017, Sophie was involved in a serious car crash that left her with a broken foot and three fractured vertebrae. She praised King Charles for his support during her recovery.
For three days, doctors were unsure if she would be paralyzed. While Queen Elizabeth offered access to Buckingham Palace’s swimming pool to aid in her recovery, King Charles ensured her family received two cooked meals a day from his Clarence House chef.
Early Life and Career
Born on August 5, 1980, in Primrose Hill, London, Sophie is the daughter of publisher Barry Winkleman and author Cindy Black. She is the half-sister of presenter Claudia Winkleman.
Sophie and Claudia had separate childhoods, with Claudia living with their mother, former newspaper editor Eve Pollard. After their wedding, Sophie and Lord Frederick moved to Los Angeles, where Sophie continued her acting career. She appeared in *Peep Show*, *Two and a Half Men*, *Death in Paradise*, *Sanditon*, and *This Is Going to Hurt*.
