28 Wilko Stores Closing After Acquisition by The Range
Today marks the closure of 28 Wilko stores as they shut their doors for the last time, leaving shelves bare and staff bidding farewell. The closure comes in the wake of The Range’s acquisition of the Wilko brand for £5 million. Despite these closures, Wilko’s presence on high streets will not vanish entirely, as The Range has confirmed its intention to continue selling Wilko products within its own stores.
Struggling Chain Initiates Store Closure Program
Wilko, facing financial difficulties, began its store closure program earlier this week, with today being the final day of trading for these 28 shops. Administrators from PwC have been actively seeking to sell off Wilko’s assets, including its brand and stores, after failing to secure a rescue deal for the entire business. Regrettably, this has resulted in over 10,000 Wilko workers losing their jobs by next month.
Future of Wilko’s Online Operations
PwC anticipates that Wilko’s online operations will recommence under new ownership once the closure of the remaining Wilko stores is completed in early October. The undisclosed deal will also see 36 workers from Wilko’s digital team transitioning to The Range.
Positive Outlook and Commitment from The Range
The Range, known for its 210 stores across the UK, is determined to uphold the value and quality associated with the Wilko brand. Additionally, The Range has expressed its intention to offer click and collect services for Wilko products through Wilko.com.
Historical Significance of Wilko
Wilko, originally founded by James Kemsey Wilkinson in Leicester in 1930, was a family-owned business that once employed 12,500 staff and operated 400 shops. Unfortunately, mounting pressures from weak consumer spending and debts to suppliers led to its hiring of administrators last month.
List of Wilko Stores Closing
Administrators have disclosed the locations of 52 Wilko stores set to close, with the first batch closing on September 12 and the remaining stores closing on September 14. These closures affect communities in various regions across the UK.
