Severe Flooding Ravages Iowa’s Sioux City Diocese, Forcing Parish Closures and Prompting Urgent Aid Efforts

Seventeen out of the 24 counties in the Sioux City Diocese have been included in Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ disaster declarations due to severe flooding.

Catholic Parishes Impacted

Many Catholic parishes had to cancel their weekend Masses.

According to Prosser, several parishes are actively working on mitigating water damage.

The diocesan Catholic Charities office is also stepping in, receiving a grant from Catholic Charities USA to provide direct financial assistance to flood victims in the area.

Extensive Losses Reported

Bishop Nickless highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that homes, vehicles, possessions, and even livelihoods have been lost due to the flooding.

He emphasized that numerous areas within the diocese have been devastated, leaving thousands in dire need.

Interfaith Support and Prayers

Bishop Nickless expressed his solidarity with all those affected, noting that people of all faiths are suffering.

He reassured the community that the Diocese of Sioux City is offering prayers and practical assistance wherever possible.

Parish Closures and Power Outages

Some parishes, like Sacred Heart in Spencer, Iowa, had to cancel weekend Masses.

As of June 24, the parish office remained closed due to a lack of power, phone, and internet service, further complicating recovery efforts.
