In a surprising demographic shift, Jasper County, a small rural area in South Carolina, has witnessed a remarkable increase in its white population unlike anywhere else in the United States.
Nestled in the southeastern corner of South Carolina, Jasper County has become a magnet for retirees seeking warmer climates and lower taxes.
This influx has significantly boosted the county’s white population, primarily driven by retirees relocating to the area.
One positive outcome of this trend has been the emergence of 55+ communities such as Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head, catering specifically to retirees looking for a relaxed lifestyle.
According to recent data from the US Census Bureau, Jasper County has experienced the fastest growth of any county in South Carolina and ranks ninth in the nation for growth rate.
This growth is particularly concentrated in towns like Ridgeland and Hardeeville.
Historically, Jasper County had a balanced racial makeup, but recent years have seen a notable shift.
As of 2023, the white population has surged, comprising 48% of the county’s residents, while the black population has seen a decrease, now accounting for 32%.
Reginald White, a local resident, commented on the economic implications of this demographic change.
He noted that the county’s economic center lies in neighboring Beaufort County, leading many young black residents to seek better job opportunities outside Jasper County.
Reasons Behind the Growth
Andrew Fulghum, Jasper County’s Administrator, attributes this explosive growth to the county’s affordable housing options, which are significantly cheaper than neighboring Beaufort County, along with easy access to major highways.
Impact on Age Demographics
The county has also seen a notable increase in its older population, with 34% of residents now aged 59 or older, up from 28% just three years earlier.
Attraction of Retirement Communities
The allure of communities like Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head, sprawling over 2,700 acres, has further cemented Jasper County’s appeal among retirees seeking a tranquil retirement destination.
In essence, Jasper County’s demographic landscape is rapidly evolving, driven by an influx of retirees attracted by its climate, cost of living, and community offerings tailored to their needs.
