…By Larry John for TDPel Media. Ken Nnamani, a former Senate President of Nigeria, has reportedly lost his wife, Jane Nnamani.
According to Naija News, Jane passed away in her early 60s over the weekend following a minor surgery in Enugu state.
The former Senate President is said to have traveled to the United States, leaving behind his wife who passed away during his absence.
Although there has been no official statement from Senator Nnamani regarding his wife’s passing, DailyPost reported the incident.
Meanwhile, the remains of Joseph Wayas, who was the Senate President during the Second Republic of Nigeria (1979-1983), have reportedly been abandoned in a London hospital.
Wayas passed away in December 2021 after a long illness at a London hospital, and some family members have attributed his death to poverty.
According to sources close to the family who spoke to Daily Trust, the family cannot afford to maintain the body of Wayas because of a lack of financial support.
The Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, inaugurated an expanded funeral committee in December 2021, after the state government mandated the then Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu, to oversee Wayas’s health management in London.
The state government released some funds to the funeral committee, which is led by Kanu Agabi, a two-time Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
Commentary:
The passing of Ken Nnamani’s wife is a tragic event, and our condolences go out to him and his family. It is unclear whether he will make an official statement about the incident, but given his position in Nigerian politics, it is likely that there will be some response from the government or other officials.
The situation with Joseph Wayas’s remains is also troubling, as it underscores the difficulties that families in Nigeria can face when dealing with healthcare costs and funeral expenses.
It is heartening to see that the Cross River State government has taken steps to support the funeral committee, but it is clear that more needs to be done to ensure that families have access to the resources they need during difficult times.
