Controversy Surrounds Springboks Trophy Tour Excluding Smaller Towns

Introduction: Exclusions in Springboks Trophy Tour

Complaints have arisen regarding smaller towns and specific areas being left out of the Webb Ellis Cup’s journey as the Springboks embark on their trophy tour on Thursday, November 2.

Tour Schedule: Major Cities Included

The Springboks will commence their tour with visits to Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Soweto.

Subsequently, they will head to Cape Town on Friday and also have a stopover in Durban on Saturday, November 4.

The Reason for Exclusions: SA Rugby’s Perspective

In a statement, SA Rugby president Mark Alexander emphasized that the primary objective of the Springbok tour was to reach as many people as possible within the limited timeframe before the squad disbands.

Prioritizing Major Population Centers

The five largest population centers in the country – Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Soweto, and Pretoria – have been prioritized to offer the maximum number of people the opportunity to welcome the team.

Acknowledging Eastern Cape’s Significance

Furthermore, the tour acknowledges the significance of the Eastern Cape in the history, development, and future of black rugby.

As a result, a visit to Buffalo City on a non-working day has been arranged to enable individuals from the region to be part of the celebration.

Voices of Discontent: Smaller Towns Feel Neglected

Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is among those who expressed their dissatisfaction with the exclusion of smaller towns.

He took to Twitter to voice his concerns, highlighting the discrepancy in the number of visits to Gauteng compared to other provinces.
