…By Lola Smith for TDPel Media. A pressure group known as Concerned Nigerians for Good Governance (CNGG) has raised concerns about the appointment of Bernard Okumagba to the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), claiming it is illegal.
The group argues that it was the minority Itsekiri nation’s turn to produce the Chairman of the Commission, as per the provisions of the act that established the NDDC.
Illegality of Okumagba’s Appointment
In a statement issued by CNGG’s Chairman, Engr. Gab Meni, and Secretary, Elder Sam Ejo in Warri, the group contends that Bernard Okumagba’s appointment disregards the regulations outlined in the Act governing the Commission.
They assert that the entire process of his appointment violates the spirit and letter of the Act, and to the detriment of the Itsekiri tribe, who are an oil-rich minority in Delta State.
They maintain that it is the Itsekiri’s rightful turn to produce the Chairman of the NDDC.
Call for Implementation of NDDC Laws
Concerned Nigerians for Good Governance called upon President Bola Tinubu and the new leadership of the National Assembly to uphold and enforce the provisions of the NDDC laws.
The group asserts that the Itsekiri, as the highest oil-producing community in Delta State, should be given their due representation in the leadership of the Commission.
Conclusion
The appointment of Bernard Okumagba to the Board of the NDDC has been met with opposition from the Concerned Nigerians for Good Governance group.
They argue that the appointment is illegal and goes against the provisions of the Act that established the Commission.
The group emphasizes the need for President Bola Tinubu and the new National Assembly leadership to ensure compliance with the NDDC laws, granting the Itsekiri tribe their rightful opportunity to hold the Chairman position.
This controversy highlights the importance of adhering to legal frameworks in the appointment and representation of key positions in government institutions.
