Pope Francis Highlights Urgent Moral Challenges and the Need for Directional Change

In a recent conversation, Pope Francis addressed the pressing moral issues of today and emphasized the necessity of embracing change in addressing these concerns.

He acknowledged the gravity of the problems moralists are confronted with and highlighted the need to take calculated risks in the pursuit of change, emphasizing the direction he had previously mentioned.

Focusing on Synodality

Responding to a question from another Jesuit, Pope Francis expressed his greatest current source of joy – the preparation for the upcoming Synod on Synodality.

He acknowledged that despite some imperfections in the management of the synod, he finds joy in witnessing the emergence of meaningful reflections and fervent discussions from various church groups, even those at the parish level.

The Pope noted that the concept of synodality was not his invention, crediting Paul VI with recognizing its significance after the Council.

He also recalled his involvement in the 2001 Synod of Bishops on bishops, sharing insights into the historical progress of synodality since its establishment in 1965.

The Essence of Synodality and the Role of the Holy Spirit

Pope Francis clarified that synodality should not be misconstrued as a political process driven by votes or personal preferences.

Instead, he emphasized that the Holy Spirit should take center stage in synodality, portraying Him as the true protagonist.

He urged participants to let the Spirit guide their discussions, drawing parallels to the transformative event of Pentecost.

The Pope sees this approach as the most potent way to navigate the path of synodality.

Guidance for Jesuits

During the conversation, Pope Francis provided advice to Jesuits about living out their vocation.

He cautioned against falling into the trap of spiritual worldliness and underscored the importance of distinguishing between preparing for dialogue with the world and compromising one’s values through worldliness.

To counteract these pitfalls, the Pope recommended daily self-reflection as advocated by the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius.

He addressed the issue of hidden self-seeking motives, including matters related to sexuality, and emphasized the role of the examination of conscience.

The Pope also stressed the significance of prayer in guiding a Jesuit’s journey, instilling a sense of fearlessness by relying on the Lord’s inspiration for guidance and action.
