Arrests Follow Invasion of ABN Television and Radio Station
Police officers implicated in the invasion of Abia Breaking News (ABN) Television and Radio station in Umuahia, the state capital, have been apprehended, as confirmed by the Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Maureen Chinaka, in a statement on Thursday.
Apology from Commissioner of Police
The Commissioner of Police for the Abia State Command, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, issued an apology for the unprofessional conduct of his officers during their invasion of the studio. The apology came as a response to the incident that occurred on Tuesday when police personnel from Umuahia Area Command stormed the studio to arrest Donald Udensi, a guest during a live program.
Damages Alleged by ABN Director
ABN Director Ifeanyi Okali claimed that numerous broadcast equipment, including laptops, cameras, and microphones, were damaged by the police personnel during the invasion.
Assessment and Detainment
The CP, during a visit to the studio, conducted an on-the-spot assessment and engaged in discussions with Director Okali. According to PPRO Chinaka, the CP assured Okali that the involved police officers had been detained, and their orderly room trial was set to commence on Thursday.
Unprofessional Conduct Acknowledged
Preliminary investigations into the incident revealed that the police officers involved in the arrest had conducted themselves unprofessionally. The statement from the PPRO emphasized that while there is no law prohibiting a police officer from making an arrest in a studio, the circumstances of the specific case did not warrant such actions.
Orderly Room Trial Begins
The detained officers face an orderly room trial starting on Thursday. If found guilty, they will be subject to disciplinary measures. The statement highlighted that their actions, if proven against protocol, would be met with appropriate consequences.
