…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. The Station Commander of Rietgat has taken the necessary steps to establish an internal disciplinary process for the police officers who allegedly failed to assist the family of Palesa Malatji in their search for her.

Palesa, a student at Ntsako Secondary School, was tragically raped and murdered on her way home from school on May 25.

Internal Investigation into Service Failure

Upon Palesa’s disappearance, her family searched for her at the school but could not find her.

Tragically, her body was discovered the following day, May 26, near Echibini Secondary School in Soshanguve, showing signs of sexual assault.

In their efforts to locate Palesa, her mother and uncle approached the police at the Community Service Centre (CSC) for assistance.

Allegations of Police Negligence

Regrettably, the police officers on duty reportedly informed the family that they were unable to help.

Failing to provide essential services to the community is considered a grave offense, tarnishing the reputation of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Condemnation from Gauteng Police Commissioner

Expressing his disappointment, Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, strongly condemned the officers present at the Phuthanang CSC for their negligence when the family initially reported the incident.

Commissioner Mawela emphasized that there is no tolerance for complicity in providing services to vulnerable groups, asserting that the safety and security of children are of utmost importance.

Learner Protests Following Palesa Malatji’s Murder

On Monday, May 29, learners in Soshanguve disrupted teaching and learning activities in some schools to protest against the murder of Palesa Malatji.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited Ntsako Secondary School and met with Malatji’s family.

Suspension of Classes and Demands for Arrest

As a result of the protests, classes at Ntsako Secondary School have been suspended, with students demanding immediate action and arrests in the rape and murder case of Palesa Malatji.

The Grade 12 learner’s brutal killing has sparked outrage and calls for justice.
