A significant new search is currently underway at a reservoir in Portugal, an area frequented by convicted sex offender Christian Brueckner, a prime suspect in the case.

Jim Gamble, a child safety expert who played a key role in the initial investigation, expressed his belief on Good Morning Britain that Brueckner “fits the bill” and that German police, who are typically cautious, are resolute in their conviction that they are on the right track.

According to a statement from Policia Judiciaria, searches are being coordinated in the Algarve at the request of the German police, with British officers present.

Portuguese news website SIC reported that an area near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, approximately 50km from Praia da Luz where Madeleine disappeared in 2007, was being cordoned off in preparation for the search.

Investigators suspect that Brueckner, a 45-year-old individual, abducted and killed three-year-old Madeleine from a holiday apartment.

Mr. Gamble emphasized during the interview that the authorities likely possess undisclosed evidence, stating, “They have something in my opinion, that they haven’t shared.

They are too positive in their public assertions about death and about this suspect not to have something else.”

He further expressed hope that if evidence is found and linked to Christian Brueckner, it would help in connecting him to the case.

The ongoing investigation is characterized by a significant difference, as German authorities maintain an active inquiry, firmly believing that they have the correct suspect and that Madeleine McCann is deceased.

Mr. Gamble highlighted the confidence of the German police in their lines of inquiry and the suspect’s profile, which aligns perfectly with their investigation.

Brueckner, currently imprisoned for rape, is a non-preferential sex offender with reported interests in online child sex abuse and possession of children’s clothing found in premises he previously occupied.

Additionally, he has been involved in burglaries.

Circumstantial evidence places a phone linked to him in close proximity to the crime scene at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

Mr. Gamble emphasized the significance of considering other potential suspects despite the strength of the evidence against Brueckner.

Brueckner had spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017.

Although he has denied any involvement in the case, Portuguese officials identified him as a suspect in June 2020.

He currently faces charges in Germany for several separate sex offenses allegedly committed in Portugal during that period.
