Police Arrest Gran Canaria Nightclub Employee Accused of Using Martial Arts Chokehold to Kill British Tourist in Playa del Ingles

In a surprising development, police have apprehended a man in connection with the death of a British tourist who was allegedly killed using a martial arts technique near a nightclub in Gran Canaria.

The tragic incident unfolded at Discoteca Chic in the Playa del Ingles area on July 27. Initially, it was believed that the 47-year-old victim had succumbed to a heart attack after consuming drugs, but the investigation has taken a darker turn.

On July 29, authorities arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of homicide. This arrest followed the discovery that the victim had been subjected to a chokehold maneuver known as Mata leao, rather than simply dying from a heart attack.

Police had initially responded to the scene and found the victim “lying lifeless on the ground” outside a nightclub. They soon confirmed the death and sealed off the area for investigation.

Evidence and Witness Accounts

The National Police in San Bartolome de Tirajana reviewed CCTV footage which indicated that an employee of the nightclub had forcibly restrained the victim by the neck before he fell and became unresponsive.

Witnesses and staff interviews revealed that the victim, who had been visibly agitated, was restrained with a Mata leao chokehold. Following this, he collapsed and lost consciousness.

Forensic Findings and Arrest

Forensic analysis later confirmed that asphyxia was the cause of death.

The police’s investigation included reviewing security footage and examining the victim’s injuries, which supported the conclusion of asphyxiation. Concerned about the possibility of the suspect fleeing, authorities conducted a search operation.

Once located, the suspect was arrested and has been detained in a local jail as the investigation continues.

Current Status

As of today, the club remains closed and no one was available for comment. The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing, with further updates expected as more details emerge.
