Pastor John-Paul Miller and Estranged Wife’s Family Reach Settlement in North Carolina Death Case Amid National Attention and Controversy

In an unexpected development, Pastor John-Paul Miller and the family of his late, estranged wife Mica have settled their dispute. This resolution comes after Mica’s tragic death drew significant media attention.

The settlement marks a turning point after Mica’s family had demanded a more thorough investigation into allegations of abuse by John-Paul. Both sides have now agreed to cease all litigation and are urging protesters to respect the pastor’s South Carolina church.

“This is over,” said John-Paul’s attorney, Russell Long.

“This global agreement is Mica’s justice. The next step is the legislative goal. We only ask that you remember Mica as the wonderful, beautiful person that she was.”

Regina Ward, the local attorney representing Mica’s family, acknowledged the potential disappointment among supporters. She explained that such high-stakes litigation can be a lengthy process and now the focus will shift to advocating for a new law.

“We are ready to go to the next chapter,” Ward said. “Our goal is to get the coercive control law bill on the agenda as soon as possible.”

Ward emphasized her desire to move past discussions about John-Paul Miller and concentrate on fundraising efforts for the proposed bill, which previously stalled in the South Carolina legislature in 2021.

Both parties are now asking protesters to direct their efforts toward supporting the new legislation rather than targeting churchgoers.

Long urged protesters to give the church community some peace, saying, “These poor people are just trying to go to church on Sundays. They’re being harassed and put in fear.”

John-Paul Miller will avoid facing civil wrongful death suits related to Mica’s death. Mica’s sister, Sierra Frances, who had petitioned to manage Mica’s estate, has also withdrawn her request.

The details of the settlement, including who will oversee Mica’s estate, remain confidential.

Mica’s Death and Public Reaction

Mica, 30, was discovered with a gunshot wound in a North Carolina state park on April 27, 2024.

Her death was ruled a suicide by local authorities. The case attracted widespread attention when John-Paul announced her death in a sermon and abruptly ended the service, insisting he should not be questioned.

Speculation online suggested John-Paul’s involvement in her death, especially after he was seen wearing a necklace similar to Mica’s. However, John-Paul has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was not with Mica on the day she died.

He claims he was in Charleston with his children and provided receipts and witnesses to support his alibi.

Controversial Claims and Reactions

John-Paul made a peculiar claim about Mica’s mental state before her death, suggesting she was unusually euphoric. He also revealed that he had previously warned Mica’s family about her potential for self-harm if she did not receive her medication.

Despite the controversy, toxicology reports confirmed Mica’s death as a suicide and refuted claims of drugging.

John-Paul’s attempts to engage in resurrection efforts following her death added another layer of complexity to the case.

Apologies and Accusations

John-Paul later admitted that a letter of apology he wrote to Mica was genuine, acknowledging past manipulative behavior. He attributed his previous silence to “wisdom and self-control” and expressed a commitment to uncovering the truth behind his wife’s death.

Moving Forward

Following a court hearing on June 5, 2024, Mica’s family gained control over her belongings and called for legislative changes to a domestic violence bill, proposing it be named “Mica’s Law.”

Despite the conclusion of this legal battle, the investigation into the circumstances of Mica’s death and the broader implications for domestic abuse law continue.

Authorities have previously stated that John-Paul Miller was not at the scene of Mica’s death, supported by 911 call recordings and surveillance footage of Mica purchasing a gun.

Miller has consistently denied any abuse, asserting, “She has never once been abused as long as she has been married to me.” The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI were involved in the investigation.
