UK Space Agency’s Funding Empowers Orbex’s Ambitious Space Launch Project
Orbex, a pioneering spaceflight company, has received substantial funding from the UK Space Agency as part of the European Space Agency’s “Boost!” initiative.
This financial support is aimed at advancing cutting-edge space launch technologies within ESA’s Commercial Space Transportation Services and Support program.
Revolutionizing Space Launches with an Ultra-Green Launch Complex
Utilizing the granted amount, Orbex plans to construct the Ultra-Green Launch Complex at Sutherland Spaceport in Scotland.
This strategic site is poised to facilitate the launch of up to 12 orbital rockets annually, with secured contracts in place with leading satellite manufacturers for commercial launches.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Forefront
Orbex’s flagship innovation, the Orbex Prime, stands as an environmentally conscious, high-performance micro-launcher.
This 19-meter-long rocket is engineered for launching small satellites into polar and sun-synchronous orbits. What sets it apart is its sustainability focus, leaving zero debris in orbit and powered by renewable bio-propane.
This approach yields a remarkable 96% reduction in carbon footprint compared to conventional fossil fuel-driven satellite launch systems.
Leadership and Funding Support
Martin Coates, CEO of Orbex, spearheads this spaceflight venture. Backed by a diverse group of investors, including the Scottish National Investment bank, prominent venture capital funds like BGF and Octopus Ventures, Heartcore Capital, High-Tech Gründerfonds, and strategic investors such as Elecnor and Jacobs, Orbex has secured numerous R&D contracts from entities like the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency, and the European Commission Horizon 2020 program.
Orbex’s Vision and Support Network
Headquartered in Scotland with production and testing facilities, Orbex also operates design and testing hubs in Denmark. With a strong financial foundation and an array of research contracts, Orbex is driving advancements in space launch technology, aligning with the evolving needs of the space industry.
