…By Lola Smith for TDPel Media. Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural group representing the Igbo community, has put forth 13 demands to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he assumes office.
According to the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group expects Tinubu to prioritize the economic well-being of the Igbo people and ensure the effective implementation of his economic policies.
Specifically, Ohanaeze emphasized the importance of improving the railway line connecting Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and addressing economic leakages at seaports.
Call for Competent Technocrats and a Government of National Unity
Isiguzoro urged President Tinubu to surround himself with experienced and untainted technocrats, rather than corrupt politicians, as he forms his government.
The group emphasized the need for a government of national unity, with the inclusion of well-qualified individuals from various political parties, such as the PDP, LP, and NNPP.
Ohanaeze sees this as a strategic move to counter any legal challenges to Tinubu’s electoral victory.
Addressing Concerns of Islamization and Ensuring Inclusivity
To allay fears of possible Islamization, Ohanaeze called on Tinubu to ensure a balanced representation of religious diversity in his government.
They expressed concerns about the prospect of having both the president and vice president, as well as the Senate President and Speaker, being Muslims.
Ohanaeze suggested that Senator Godswill Akpabio could be a suitable candidate for the Senate Presidency, based on his achievements and ability to balance the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Focus on Economic Development and Reconciliation Efforts
Ohanaeze emphasized its interest in the economic aspects of Tinubu’s administration, pledging continued support similar to what was extended during his tenure as governor of Lagos State.
The group called for the resolution of existing issues in Nigeria, including the release of political prisoners like Nnamdi Kanu.
Ohanaeze also stressed the importance of upholding the principles of federal character in all appointments and ensuring meritocracy.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Support and Collaboration
In conclusion, Ohanaeze expressed its commitment to supporting President Tinubu, with the belief that collaboration with the Igbo community would propel his government to new heights of success.
They assured Tinubu that with Ndigbo by his side, the sky would be the starting limit of his achievements.
