In Abia State’s Ukwa West Local Government Area, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) dismantled eight illicit modular refineries.
This comes just two weeks after the command demolished ten other illicit refineries in the same area.
Mr Ayinla Olowo, the NSCDC’s Abia State Commandant, informed reporters in his office in Umuahia that operatives from the command’s Anti-vandal Unit, dubbed “Operation Sting,” dismantled the illegal refineries.
He claimed that this was done to clear the state of unlawful petroleum product trades.
Olowo added: “The operatives destroyed eight illegal refineries and disconnected all the pipes with which they siphoned products from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s pipelines.”
He described the activities of illegal petroleum refiners as economic sabotage, saying that “their activities are having negative impact on the nation’s economic prosperity.
