NPC’s Data Collection Initiative:
The National Population Commission (NPC) has kickstarted the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) for the period 2023-2024 in Niger State.
Muhammad Dattijo Usman, the federal commissioner of NPC in the state, highlighted the objective during a recent press conference in Minna.
Focus Areas and Objectives:
Usman outlined several critical indicators for which they aim to gather high-quality data. These indicators include fertility rates, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, maternal and child health, childhood mortality, contraceptive usage, gender-related concerns, among others.
This comprehensive data is intended to support family planning, maternal and child health requirements, and evidence-based planning for resource allocation.
Cross-Ministerial Collaboration and Support:
The program is a collaborative effort across various ministries, involving federal ministries such as women’s affairs, the national bureau of statistics, and the federal ministry of health.
It receives financial and technical support from USAID, along with partnerships with significant entities like the UN Population Funds, Global Fund, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and WHO.
Anticipated Impact and Outcomes:
Usman expressed confidence in the program’s ability to surmount challenges in data collection and analysis. The ultimate goal is to generate insights that will inform policy-making, drive progress, and improve the overall quality of life.
