Celebrations culminate the Notting Hill Carnival.

The annual celebration of Caribbean culture and history witnessed a vibrant adult parade with thousands of participants. Revelers were seen enjoying themselves on floats, accompanied by feathered mas bands dancing to the rhythm. The atmosphere was filled with the enticing aroma of jerk chicken wafting through the side streets, where a variety of sound systems played genres ranging from rare groove to house, samba, reggae, and ska.

By the end of the bank holiday, it’s anticipated that over two million individuals will have joined the festivities in Notting Hill. The carnival, known as Europe’s largest street party, is commemorating two significant milestones: the introduction of sound systems and mas bands 50 years ago, which transformed the event into a large-scale celebration, and the 75th anniversary of the docking of the Empire Windrush, which marked the beginning of mass Caribbean immigration.

The Metropolitan Police reported that the carnival’s atmosphere had been generally positive throughout the day, and as a precautionary measure, a Section 60 order granting additional search powers to officers would be in effect overnight until 2 am. This step was taken due to “information” indicating that some individuals had entered the area while carrying knives.

According to an update released shortly before midnight on Sunday, the Met informed that 85 people had been arrested, with charges including 11 for sexual assault and 10 for assaulting a police officer. On Monday, numerous officers were observed patrolling local parks and conducting searches for suspicious items in bins and beneath protective tarpaulin placed on the grass.
