Clarifying the Role of President Tinubu
The leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, Professor Banji Akintoye, has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu played a significant role in securing the release of Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from protective custody in the Republic of Benin.
Akintoye clarified that it was the Yoruba Nation agitation leaders and their close associates who facilitated Igboho’s freedom.
Sunday Igboho’s Recent Freedom
Sunday Igboho, who had been in custody in Cotonou for about two years, was released by the Beninese government led by President Patrice Talon.
He expressed his gratitude for the support and solidarity shown by prominent Yoruba leaders during his detention.
Addressing Online Appeals
The Yoruba Nation leader found it necessary to address online appeals that called on President Tinubu to facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Akintoye emphasized that there was a misconception that President Tinubu was involved in Igboho’s release.
Setting the Record Straight
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Gani Alagbala, Akintoye stated, “The Nigerian authorities and administration under the presidency of Bola Tinubu has got no hands in the release and total freedom of our frontliner, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Igboho.”
He attributed Igboho’s release to divine intervention and the relentless efforts of the Yoruba leadership, supported by well-wishers both within and outside the Yoruba community.
Appreciation to the Republic of Benin
Akintoye expressed gratitude to the government of the Republic of Benin for their role in ensuring justice was served in Igboho’s case.
Despite political pressures, the Beninese government upheld principles of justice, which ultimately led to Sunday Igboho’s release.
A Message of Support to Nnamdi Kanu
The statement concluded by wishing a speedy release to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, who remains in detention in Nigeria.
Akintoye extended support and solidarity to their Igbo brothers in their quest for Kanu’s freedom.
