Nigerian Transwoman Takes Legal Action Against Assailant in Landmark Assault and Robbery Case in Lagos

Pursuit of Justice with Human Rights Organization’s Support

In a significant legal development, a Nigerian transwoman has taken a man to a Lagos magistrate court, accusing him of assaulting and robbing her.

The victim, safeguarding her identity for safety, narrates being lured to the perpetrator’s home last year, where she faced violent assault and theft due to her gender identity.

With the support of Minority Watch Nigeria, a human rights-focused non-profit organization, the transwoman pursued justice by filing a two-count charge of assault and theft against the accused.

The organization recently shared details of the case, disclosing that an out-of-court settlement was reached on Jan. 9, 2024, leading to the withdrawal of charges after mutual agreement.

Magistrate’s Stern Warning and Expressing Concerns

Upon the resolution, Honourable Magistrate Mrs. M.O Alao issued a stern warning to the perpetrator, emphasizing that assault is not acceptable.

Expressing concerns off the record, the magistrate stated that it is a shame that such criminal acts still occur in the contemporary age.

Support for LGBTQI+ Rights and Justice

Minority Watch supported the court’s decision, highlighting the case as a model of LGBTQI+ individuals in Nigeria exercising their right to seek justice.

Despite the out-of-court settlement, the organization emphasized that the case serves as a powerful example of LGBTQI+ voices being heard in Nigeria.

Amplifying the LGBTQI+ Voice

“We agree with the magistrate. Those who attack queer people in Nigeria do so because they believe they can get away with it.

Though this case ended with an out-of-court settlement, it is still a stellar example of our belief that LGBTQI people in Nigeria have a voice. At Minority Watch, we exist to amplify that voice,” stated Minority Watch.
