The newly elected officials are scheduled to be inaugurated on June 13, 2023, under the leadership of former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, who now holds the executive position.
Corruption Charges and Returning Lawmakers under EFCC’s Scrutiny
As the new Senate takes shape, several members are already facing corruption charges under the scrutiny of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Some of these lawmakers are even vying for leadership positions within the assembly.
Gabriel Suswam’s Allegations
Gabriel Suswam, a returning Senator representing Benue North East district, is facing a total of 32 charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
These charges are directly linked to his tenure as the Governor of Benue State.
Suswam is accused of diverting N9.79 billion, including funds designated for police reform and a subsidy reinvestment program.
Orji Uzor Kalu’s Legal Battle
Orji Uzor Kalu, who was previously sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2019 for a N7.65 billion fraud committed during his first Senate term, had his conviction nullified by the Supreme Court, ordering a retrial.
The EFCC has accused him of stealing and mismanaging funds from Abia State during his governorship.
Investigation into Ifeanyi Ubah
Ifeanyi Ubah, the Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas Limited and Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, is currently under investigation by the EFCC.
He is alleged to have received N43.29 billion through a petroleum subsidy scheme in 2011.
Abba Moro’s Legal Troubles
Abba Moro, a former interior minister and Senator representing Benue South senatorial zone, is under investigation for his involvement in an alleged fraud related to the disastrous Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment exercise in 2014, which resulted in the tragic death of 20 individuals.
Additionally, Moro is facing corruption charges amounting to an alleged $2.5 million fraud.
EFCC Investigation of Aliyu Wamakko
Aliyu Wamakko, a former governor of Sokoto State, is currently being investigated by the EFCC for his alleged involvement in public fund theft and money laundering totaling N15 billion.
Wamakko has vehemently denied these allegations.
Peter Nwaoboshi’s Fraud Allegations
Peter Nwaoboshi, the representative of Delta North, was arraigned by the EFCC in 2018 for his alleged involvement in a N322 million fraud.
Despite his ongoing trial, Nwaoboshi is expected to return to the Senate.
