…By Larry John for TDPel Media. The newly-elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has given his assurance that under his leadership, the lower chamber will not serve as a mere “rubber stamp” for the executive branch.
Abbas made this statement during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
House Speaker Pledges to Protect Nigerian Citizens’ Interests
Speaking alongside his Deputy, Ben Kalu, Speaker Abbas emphasized that the House of Representatives would take a stand against any executive actions that undermine the welfare of Nigerians.
He pointed out that his election was supported by members from different political parties, including the opposition.
This demonstrated their belief that the House would not succumb to being a rubber stamp under his leadership.
Speaker Abbas Aims to Build on the Achievements of Previous House
While expressing his commitment to the independence of the legislature, Speaker Abbas also expressed optimism that the 10th House would build upon and surpass the accomplishments of the 9th House.
He emphasized that if the executive pursued actions contrary to the public’s interest, the House would firmly oppose them.
Wide Support Demonstrates Confidence in the House’s Autonomy
Speaker Abbas highlighted the broad acceptance of his leadership, with members across party lines voting for him.
He pointed out that the entire People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other minority parties voted for him.
This significant support from various political groups indicates their belief that the House of Representatives, under his stewardship, will protect the sanctity of the National Assembly and its legislative responsibilities.
By giving these assurances, Speaker Abbas aims to reinforce the notion that the House of Representatives will maintain its autonomy and act in the best interests of the Nigerian people.
