…By Judah Olanisebee for TDPel Media. House of Representatives Rejects Electricity Tariff Increase Request
The House of Representatives took a decisive step by instructing the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) not to approve the proposed electricity tariff increase.
This development took place during a plenary session on Thursday in the Green Chambers.
This decision followed a motion put forth by Sani Madaki, a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) representing Kano State.
The Concern over Rising Petrol Prices: Recent reports had created apprehension among the public regarding a potential 40 percent increase in electricity tariffs.
The supposed basis for this increase was the 2022 multi-year tariff order (MYTO), which undergoes bi-annual reviews.
Speculations suggested that a new tariff regime would come into effect on July 1 nationwide.
However, there was no official confirmation of the new prices, and as a result, the existing tariff structure remained unchanged.
The House’s Resolution: Recognizing the concerns raised by the proposed tariff increase, the House of Representatives took swift action.
Responding to the motion presented by Sani Madaki, the members of the Green Chambers passed a resolution directing the NERC not to approve the Discos’ request for an electricity tariff hike.
This decision serves as a response to the worries expressed by the general public about the potential economic burden that increased electricity prices could impose.
Conclusion: The House of Representatives’ resolution, which prevents the approval of an electricity tariff increase, reflects their commitment to addressing the concerns of the Nigerian people.
By rejecting the proposal, they aim to mitigate the impact of rising petrol prices and ensure that electricity remains affordable for citizens across the country.
This decision stands as a testament to the responsiveness and vigilance of the legislative body in protecting the interests of the Nigerian populace.
