Music Industry’s Influence on Substance Abuse
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, has shed light on the challenges law enforcement faces due to the prevalence of substance abuse within the music industry.
Hundeyin revealed that many musicians consistently glorify drug use, making policing efforts more challenging.
Speaking at a Press Week Lecture/Symposium
Hundeyin made these remarks during the 2023 Press Week Lecture/Symposium, organized in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Lagos Chapter, held on Thursday, September 28.
Call for Elderly Nigerians’ Involvement
During his address, Hundeyin called upon elderly Nigerians to join the fight against substance abuse.
He emphasized that this issue extends beyond the youth, noting that even superstars within the music industry are involved in this menace.
He highlighted a disturbing trend where musicians, when faced with health challenges, avoid seeking medical attention at hospitals and instead opt for home treatments provided by nurses due to drug abuse.
Music Industry’s Role in Glamorizing Drugs
Hundeyin expressed concern about the role of the music industry in glamorizing drug use.
He pointed out that some musicians contribute to the normalization of drug abuse through their lyrics and public image.
He cautioned that the glittering facade presented by the industry does not always reflect the reality of its consequences.
Substance Abuse and Increased Crime
The Lagos Police PRO stressed that substance abuse, particularly drug addiction among youths, contributes significantly to the rise in criminal activities in society.
He highlighted that the police regularly apprehend criminals in the state, and in approximately 90 percent of these cases, the individuals attribute their actions to the influence of drugs.
Addressing a Growing Challenge
Hundeyin’s remarks shed light on the growing challenge of substance abuse and its impact on policing efforts in Lagos.
The call for collective action, including the involvement of elderly Nigerians, underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle this pressing issue and reduce its contribution to criminal behavior in society.
