Jay Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, is reaching out for help after the devastating discovery of her son’s body in a ravine in Tenerife.
Jay, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was found at the base of the ravine near Masca on Monday, nearly a month after he first went missing on June 17.
The family is currently in Tenerife, waiting to bring Jay’s body back home.
In a heartfelt update, Ms. Duncan expressed the family’s overwhelming grief and their need for additional support. “We are working with agencies to arrange Jay’s repatriation to the UK,” she explained.
“The funds we have, along with any future donations, will help cover these costs and pay for Jay’s funeral back home.
We want to give our boy the send-off he deserves, so please continue to share and support our fundraiser.”
Support from Charities
The family has been receiving support from LBT Global, a charity that assists people abroad, and Signi Zoekhondon, a Dutch search team.
Ms. Duncan thanked both organizations for their dedication and announced they would be returning home soon. “We are incredibly grateful for their help during this impossible time,” she said.
Waiting for Repatriation
With the Spanish authorities having completed their post-mortem examination, the family now faces the painful wait to bring Jay back to the UK.
Matthew Searle, chief executive of LBT Global, noted that the GoFundMe page has raised over £59,000, which could aid in the repatriation process.
Tributes Left Behind
In the meantime, Jay’s family has left touching tributes at the site where he was found. Bunches of white chrysanthemums and roses, along with handwritten messages, were placed near the ravine.
Debbie Turner’s note read: “To my beautiful boy. I’m so sorry we never found you. I miss you so much.
You will be forever young and forever missed. Love you so much, Mum.” Jay’s father, Walter Slater, and his brother, Zak, also left heartfelt messages, expressing their profound sorrow and love.
Jay’s Disappearance
Jay had gone missing after a night out at the NRG music festival in Playa de las Americas. He left his friends and was later seen with two men, one of whom has a criminal record.
The Spanish police have since deemed these men ‘not relevant’ to the investigation.
The Slater family continues to mourn the loss of their beloved son and brother, and their hope now rests on honoring his memory and bringing him home.
