Thapelo Morena Reflects on Success at Mamelodi Sundowns
A Pivotal Moment in 2016
Thapelo Morena, the 30-year-old right-back/winger for Mamelodi Sundowns, took a trip down memory lane to reflect on his successful journey with the Brazilians, dating back to 2016.
Discovery by Coach Pitso Mosimane
Morena initially captured the attention of then Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane, during his tenure at Bloemfontein Celtic. This encounter led to his signing with the Tshwane giants in 2016. Since joining Sundowns, Morena has celebrated five Premier Soccer League titles, marking a remarkable period of success.
A Season of Recovery
Despite his achievements, Morena has yet to make an appearance for the Brazilians in the current season due to a hamstring injury.
The Importance of a Healthy Changing Room
Speaking on the Sundowns’ Pitchside podcast, Morena emphasized the significance of a positive and harmonious changing room atmosphere in achieving success on the football field.
“The most important thing as a footballer is to have a healthy change room, and if you have that, you will win everything,” Morena remarked, as quoted by The Citizen.
Traditions at Sundowns
He also mentioned the unique traditions at Sundowns, highlighting one particular practice. Morena shared that when he arrived from Celtic, he used to wear headphones while inspecting the pitch before a game. However, the team’s culture at Sundowns discouraged this practice.
“It was Denis Onyango who said that to me, and we also explain to the new guys that we don’t do that here,” Morena explained.
Emotional Triumph
Reflecting on his first league title with Masandawana in the 2017/18 season, Morena expressed the emotional significance of the achievement. He recalled the moment after the game when he couldn’t wait to take the medal home to his father, who was elated. His father acknowledged that Morena was living the dream he had always aspired to achieve.
