Ministry of Justice authorities are investigating a disturbing incident at HMP Swaleside, where 25 staff members fell ill after consuming a curry allegedly laced with the synthetic drug Spice.
This marks the second such incident in UK prisons in recent weeks, sparking concerns over inmate tampering with food served to prison staff.
Spice Poisoning Suspicions:
The incident, reminiscent of a previous case at HMP Lewes, has raised suspicions of Spice contamination in the prison’s canteen meals.
Spice, a synthetic psychoactive substance, can induce severe symptoms such as breathing difficulties and hallucinations.
The Criminal Justice Workers Union has urged for a comprehensive investigation into what it describes as a “mass poisoning of staff” at the high-security Swaleside facility.
Calls for Action and Accountability:
Andy Hamlin, representing the Criminal Justice Workers Union, criticized Swaleside prison management for allegedly downplaying the incident and instructed staff not to discuss it.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the risks posed by Spice exposure to individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
The union has called upon HM Prison and Probation Service to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure the health and safety of prison staff.
Prior Incidents and Ongoing Concerns:
The incident at HMP Swaleside follows a similar case at HMP Lewes, where 15 individuals fell ill after consuming ‘poisoned’ curry during a religious service.
Paramedics initially suspected the involvement of synthetic opioid fentanyl, sparking fears of a drug-related poisoning.
However, subsequent investigations suggested alternative causes, leading to heightened vigilance in monitoring food safety protocols within UK prisons.
Ministry of Justice Response and Continuing Oversight:
In response to the Swaleside incident, the Ministry of Justice confirmed an ongoing investigation and emphasized collaboration with relevant agencies.
While reassuring the public that those hospitalized were not in critical condition, the Ministry underscored the seriousness of the matter.
HMP Swaleside, known for its high levels of violence and accessibility to drugs, continues to face scrutiny, with efforts focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of both staff and inmates.
