Icy Landing Mishap
In a dramatic incident today, a passenger plane mistakenly landed on the frozen Kolyma River in remote Zyryanka, Yakutia, due to a pilot’s error. The Polar Airlines An-24 plane carried 30 passengers and four crew members.
Safe Evacuation
Despite the unexpected landing on the river’s ice, all passengers and crew were successfully evacuated on foot. The freezing conditions, with temperatures as low as minus 41 degrees Celsius, presented a challenging situation.
Unplanned River ‘Runway’
The 52-year-old An-24 aircraft, flying from Yakutsk, erroneously landed on the frozen river instead of the intended landing strip on the riverbank near the remote Zyryanka settlement.
Response and Investigation
The incident, categorized as ‘serious’ by Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, prompted investigations by the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office.
Initial assessments point to pilot error as the cause of the landing mishap.
No Significant Damage Reported
Despite the plane remaining on the ice, no substantial damage was reported, and all passengers and crew emerged unharmed from the incident. However, the aircraft did not continue its intended flight path to Srednekolymsk as scheduled.
