On Sunday night, Marius Borg Høiby, the 27-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, found himself in serious trouble. Høiby spent over 30 hours in custody following a troubling incident at an apartment in Frogner, Oslo.
The situation escalated when a woman in her twenties called the police, leading to Høiby’s arrest.
According to reports from Se og Hør, Høiby, who is Mette-Marit’s eldest son with her former partner Morten Borg, allegedly assaulted the woman both psychologically and physically.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a concussion but was later released early Monday morning.
The incident resulted in Høiby being placed in solitary confinement, and a blood test was administered to determine if he was under the influence of drugs.
Mette-Marit, who was previously a single mother when she met Crown Prince Haakon in 1999, was expected to attend the men’s 1500-meter final at the Paris Olympics.
However, Crown Prince Haakon appeared alone in the stands as the Crown Princess decided to “temporarily postpone” her trip, according to a statement from the Palace.
Marius Borg Høiby has enlisted Øyvind Bratlien, an expert in high-profile criminal cases, as his defense lawyer. Bratlien has stated that the charge is for assault, the least severe form of violence under the law.
Neither he nor Høiby have been fully briefed on the case details yet. The Norwegian security service (PST), responsible for the royal family’s safety, confirmed they were informed of the incident but declined to comment further, referring inquiries to the Oslo police.
Impact on Royal Family Events
This incident has overshadowed what should have been a celebratory time for the Norwegian royal family. Princess Martha Louise, Crown Prince Haakon’s older sister, is set to marry ‘Shaman’ Durek Verrett on August 31.
This relationship has already stirred controversy, especially after Princess Martha Louise stepped down as a working royal in 2022 due to backlash over Verrett’s controversial views.
Høiby’s Public Role and Past Relationships
Marius Borg Høiby, who was a public figure during his childhood, stepped away from the limelight when he turned 20. The royal court announced that he would no longer participate in official activities.
Høiby, who has no official duties and prefers to stay out of the public eye, was previously linked to heiress Linn Helena Nilsen, but their relationship ended in July 2017.
This incident has brought unwelcome attention and stress to the royal family during a period that was meant to be filled with joy.
