Mamelodi Sundowns Parts Ways with Promise Mkhuma, Leaving the Club as a Free Agent Amidst Squad Overhaul in Tshwane

In a significant move ahead of the 2024/25 season, Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning DStv Premiership champions, have decided to part ways with Promise Mkhuma.

The attacking midfielder, who spent the last season on loan at AmaTuks from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, struggled to secure a regular starting position.

Despite featuring in 11 matches across various competitions, Mkhuma didn’t notch any goals or assists during his stint.

Mkhuma’s journey saw him join the University of Pretoria on a season-long loan from Sundowns at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign.

Prior to this, he had a spell at the now-defunct All Stars, where he managed to score twice in 12 appearances.

His initial breakthrough came in 2020 when he was promoted to Mamelodi Sundowns’ senior team by then-head coach Pitso Mosimane, following standout performances for the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side.

Moving On as a Free Agent

As of June 30, 2024, Mkhuma became a free agent as Sundowns opted not to renew his contract.

This decision aligns with the club’s broader strategy of revamping their squad, which also saw the departure of other key players like Thabiso Kutumela, Gaston Sirino, Bongani Zungu, and Brian Onyango.

The restructuring efforts at Sundowns recently included parting ways with head coach Rulani Mokwena, who mutually agreed to leave despite having three years left on his contract.

Mokwena has since taken up a coaching role at Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca.

New Signings and Future Prospects

In the midst of these changes, Sundowns secured the services of Kobamelo Kodisang from Portuguese side Moreirense F.C. The 24-year-old signed a three-year contract with an option to extend for two more years, highlighting the club’s continued commitment to refreshing their squad while aiming for sustained success.
