…By Larry John for TDPel Media. Gavin Willie and Jemay Abdullah, a couple from London, were discovered to have made nearly £100,000 from drug dealing.
Their activities came to light when Willie was caught driving at 100mph on the M4 with a significant amount of cash, cannabis, and a pick-axe handle in his possession.
Initially claiming to be visiting Swansea to purchase a dog, evidence from their phones revealed their involvement in large-scale cannabis buying and selling, as well as direct dealing with users.
Sentencing and Proceeds of Crime Act Hearing
Last October, Willie received a prison sentence of two years and six months, while Abdullah was given a 12-month suspended term for 18 months.
In a recent hearing under the proceeds of crime act, Newport Crown Court aimed to determine the fate of the money generated through their illegal activities.
Seized Funds and Repayment
The court established that Willie had benefitted from his crimes to the amount of approximately £49,000, but could only pay back £8,110.
Abdullah, on the other hand, had made around £48,000 but had only £8,000 available.
The funds available for repayment consisted of the £16,110 discovered by the police in Willie’s car.
The presiding judge, Dyfed Llion Thomas, agreed that the seized cash would be used to cover the proceeds of crime debts.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
During the initial arrest, police noticed the expired tax of Willie’s vehicle on the M4 near Port Talbot.
A high-speed chase ensued, spanning nine miles and reaching speeds exceeding 100mph.
After the VW Passat eventually stopped, Willie provided a false name but was identified through fingerprinting.
The subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 207g of cannabis valued at around £2,500, bundles of cash, and a pick-axe handle.
Guilty Pleas and Sentencing
Willie pleaded guilty to charges of possession of cannabis with intent to supply, being involved in the supply of cannabis, possession of criminal property, and dangerous driving.
Abdullah admitted to possession of cannabis with intent to supply and being involved in the supply of cannabis.
In addition to her suspended prison term, Abdullah was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and participate in a rehabilitation program.
