Parents of Leah Sharibu Express Concerns Over Daughter’s Alleged New Marital Status
The parents of Leah Sharibu, the young girl who was abducted by Boko Haram terrorists over five years ago, have spoken out regarding recent rumors surrounding their daughter’s marital status.
They find the news of her alleged divorce from an ISWAP commander and subsequent remarriage disheartening and confusing.
Leah Sharibu’s Tragic Story
Leah Sharibu was among the 110 female students of the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, who were abducted on February 19, 2018, by Boko Haram terrorists.
While some of her fellow students were released following negotiations, Leah, then 14 years old, remains in captivity because she steadfastly refused to renounce her Christian faith.
Speculation Surrounding Leah’s Marriage
Recent speculations emerged, claiming that Leah Sharibu, held by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), had “remarried” another terrorist commander, Ali Abdallah, in the Lake Chad area, supposedly after securing a divorce from her initial ‘husband’ imposed upon her.
Parents Express Their Concerns
Dr. Gloria Puldu, spokesperson for Leah’s parents and President of the Leah Foundation, issued a statement expressing the family’s concerns.
Puldu emphasized that the news about Leah’s alleged divorce and remarriage was disheartening and raised questions about the credibility of such claims.
Lack of Substantiated Evidence
Puldu questioned the reliability of the information, particularly given the absence of concrete evidence, such as pictures, audio, or video, to support these claims.
The statement further inquired about the credibility of the sources behind these reports and why the Nigerian government had not been involved in securing Leah’s release.
Unfulfilled Promises and Continued Captivity
The statement reminded the public of past promises made by former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure Leah’s release, promises that remained unfulfilled.
The family expressed deep disappointment that President Buhari left office without fulfilling his commitment to bring Leah home.
Call to Action for President Tinubu
In light of the unfulfilled promises, the family called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to secure Leah’s freedom.
They stressed the government’s primary responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerian citizens.
International Community’s Silence
The statement also highlighted the apparent abandonment of Leah Sharibu and others held captive by militant groups.
The international community’s lack of demand for accountability or transparency in Nigeria while providing aid and relief was noted as a concerning issue.
The family’s plea for Leah’s release and their call for action reverberate in a situation that has gone on for too long, leaving a young girl’s fate uncertain amidst the chaos.
