…By Larry John for TDPel Media. Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the Labour Party (LP), has once again criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the outcome of the 2023 general elections.
Okonkwo referred to the INEC leadership as ‘devils’ and directed his criticism towards the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, who declared a winner in the state’s supplementary 2023 governorship election amidst ongoing vote counting.
The INEC Leadership: ‘Devils’ in Disguise:
Okonkwo did not hold back in his criticism, stating that if the Adamawa REC is considered a demon, then the leadership of INEC in Abuja should be seen as devils.
He expressed his belief that the INEC leadership is responsible for the failures of the electoral process and accused them of not upholding their duties in accordance with the law.
INEC’s Defence of Technical Glitch:
In response to the technical glitch that affected the upload of the 2023 presidential election result on the Result Viewing Portal (IReV), INEC spokesperson Festus Okoye defended the electoral body.
Okoye stated that the technical issue should not be used to judge the entire election and denied any waste of taxpayers’ money due to the inability to upload results in real-time.
He also assured that the police have completed their investigation into the actions of the Adamawa REC, and INEC plans to proceed with the prosecution.
Okonkwo’s Reaction:
Okonkwo took to Twitter to express his disappointment with INEC’s response, accusing Festus Okoye of lying and criticizing INEC’s failure to fulfill its duties in accordance with the law.
He highlighted the fact that no one has been held accountable for the failure to transmit and upload the presidential results, despite Okoye’s statement regarding the imminent prosecution of the Adamawa REC.
Okonkwo lamented the presence of incompetent and dishonest individuals in INEC, believing that progress in Nigeria would be difficult to achieve with such individuals in leadership positions.
Conclusion:
Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the Labour Party, voiced his strong criticism of the INEC leadership, labeling them as ‘devils.’
He specifically targeted the suspended Adamawa REC and expressed his dissatisfaction with INEC’s response to the technical glitch in the result upload process.
Okonkwo’s remarks reflect his concerns about the competence and integrity of INEC, as he believes these issues hinder progress in Nigeria’s electoral system.
