Kegan Johannes has opened up about how a particular Mamelodi Sundowns player influenced his decision to join the club.
Johannes, who recently left SuperSport United to sign a long-term deal with the Brazilians, shared his journey during an interview on the Pitchside Podcast with Sundowns legend Hlompo Kekana.
Johannes revealed that it wasn’t a former teammate but rather a close friend who played a pivotal role in his move.
He specifically mentioned Rushine De Reuck, highlighting their strong friendship.
“It wasn’t even a former teammate, it was a fellow friend,” Johannes explained. “The one that I speak to probably the most is Rushine De Reuck.”
While Johannes did talk to other former teammates and players he’s worked with before, it was De Reuck’s insights that stood out.
He noted, “I haven’t really spoken [that much] with my former teammates. Also, I’ve spoken with Jody [February] and most of the guys I’ve played with before as well.”
Insights on the Sundowns Environment
Johannes sought opinions on the club’s environment and was pleased to hear positive feedback.
“I just asked them how was the environment, and they told me that ‘the environment here is winning’.
That’s the culture of the club,” he said. For Johannes, who thrives on a winning mentality, this was a perfect match. “I love to win. I’m not someone that’s gonna be okay with losing,” he added.
Johannes’ Ambitions with Sundowns
At just 23, Johannes is eager to make a significant impact at Sundowns. He aims to surpass the club’s past successes and set new standards.
“I want to make history or to write more history than what the club has already written,” Johannes stated.
His goal is to win as many titles as possible and ensure that Sundowns becomes a benchmark for excellence in football.
“If they speak about football heritage, they mention Mamelodi Sundowns,” he concluded.
