Unfulfilled Pledges and Delayed Aid, Kaduna Bombing Victims Left Waiting
Victims of the Kaduna bombing, which occurred on December 3, have expressed their disappointment as they are still awaiting the financial assistance promised by the 109 senators in the National Assembly.
The senators had committed to donating their December 2023 salaries, amounting to N109 million, to the victims of the accidental bombing by the Nigerian Army.
Unkept Promise
During a condolence visit to Kaduna in December, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin assured the victims that the senators would fulfill their pledge.
However, a recent investigation by the Punch revealed that the promised funds have not been disbursed as anticipated.
Senate Spokesman’s Explanation
Yemi Adaramodu, the spokesman for the Senate, confirmed the delay in fulfilling the pledge but attributed it to procedural reasons.
Adaramodu clarified that the December monthly salaries, pledged for donation, would be received in January, and the commitment to the victims would be honored.
Challenges in Disbursement
Despite a reported collection of about N140 million, a government official, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the disbursement to victims was facing delays.
Many contributors who pledged financial support have yet to redeem their commitments, nearly two months after the tragic incident.
Victims Left in Limbo
Idris Dahiru, who lost 30 family members in the bombing, expressed disappointment that the promised aid has not materialized.
He highlighted that some individuals who publicly announced donations failed to redeem their pledges.
Dahiru emphasized the ongoing security concerns in Tudun Biri and urged the government to address them promptly.
Lack of Development in Tudun Biri
Another victim, Aliyu Yakubu, shared concerns about the slow pace of development in Tudun Biri.
Aside from the ongoing construction of a central mosque and road clearance, there has been little progress.
The establishment of a military formation, promised for security purposes, has yet to be realized, leaving the community vulnerable.
Frustration Over Unredeemed Pledges
On the matter of financial aid, Ibrahim, a victim, expressed frustration, stating that the victims had not received any funds from the government.
He mentioned being informed that many who made pledges failed to redeem them, further complicating the situation for those affected by the tragedy.
