…By for TDPel Media. On Saturday, 29 July 2023, Johannesburg will witness a sea of red as thousands of EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) supporters converge at FNB Stadium in Soweto to celebrate the party’s 10th anniversary.
JMPD Announces Road Closures for EFF Event
In anticipation of the event, Xolani Fihla, the spokesperson of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), has issued a warning about road closures around the FNB Stadium precinct on the day of the celebration.
Gates will open at 08h00, and the event is scheduled to begin at 10h00, concluding at 00h00 the following morning.
Roads and Streets Affected
Fihla specified the roads and freeways that will be directly affected during the EFF’s anniversary celebration.
The list includes Nasrec Road, Rifle Range Road, M1 South and North Freeway, N1 South and North Freeway, Landbou Road, Commerce Street, Golden Highway, Aerodrome Road, Adcock Ingram Avenue, Soweto Highway, Booysens Reserve Road, Crownwood Road, Shaft 17, N17 Freeway, Pat Mbatha Bus Way, Treu Road, Recreation Road, Jukskei Drive, Colorado Drive, and Amethyst Road.
Nasrec Road to Form Three Lanes and Closure of Soweto Highway
Nasrec Road will be temporarily converted into three lanes to manage the flow of traffic before, during, and after the celebrations.
This lane arrangement will be in effect from Adcock Ingram Road to Recreation Road on the Southern Side of the stadium and from the N17 traffic circle to Shaft 17 on the Northern side.
Moreover, Soweto Highway will be closed off to traffic from 06h00 between the N1 bridge and Mentz Street in Booysens.
Additional Road Closures
Several other road closures will be implemented at key intersections, including Nasrec Road and Shaft 17, Nasrec Road and Booysens Reserve Road, Nasrec Road and Landbou Road, Nasrec Road and Recreation Road, Booysens Reserve Road and Crownwood Road, Crownwood Road and Amethyst Road, Booysens Reserve Road and League Avenue, and Pat Mbatha Bus Way and Treu Road.
Appeal to Motorists and Suggested Alternative Routes
In light of the road closures, the JMPD is appealing to motorists to familiarize themselves with the traffic management plan for the day.
They are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and consider alternative options such as the N1 Freeway, the M1 Freeway, the N12 Freeway, Main Reef Road, Aerodrome Road, and Adcock Ingram Avenue to avoid the FNB Stadium Precinct during the EFF’s 10th-anniversary celebrations.
As the event draws near, the city of Johannesburg is preparing for a significant gathering, but road users are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure a smooth flow of traffic during the festivities.
