Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently took aim at wealthy American protesters who support the Palestinian cause and criticize Israel’s fight against Hamas.
In a speech before Congress that earned him multiple standing ovations, Netanyahu praised the support from the U.S. but didn’t shy away from condemning the anti-Israel demonstrators.
These protesters, he noted, have set up camps on college campuses and used anti-Semitic rhetoric, targeting Jewish students in the process.
During his address, Netanyahu made a striking comparison, remarking, “Some of these protesters hold up signs proclaiming ‘Gays for Gaza.’
They might as well hold up signs saying ‘Chickens for KFC,’” which elicited laughter from the audience. In a dramatic turn, six protesters who had infiltrated the chamber were swiftly arrested after revealing bright yellow “Seal the deal now” t-shirts beneath their jackets.
Netanyahu’s speech focused on the crucial partnership between the U.S. and Israel, emphasizing that their collaboration is vital in the fight against Hamas.
He declared, “America and Israel must stand together,” and highlighted the significance of this alliance in defeating their common enemies.
The Prime Minister vowed to continue the conflict until Hamas is completely eradicated, referencing the October 7, 2023 massacre in Israel, which he described as a day comparable to “20 9/11s.”
Criticism of Campus and Political Leaders
The Prime Minister also criticized American university leaders for failing to condemn anti-Israel sentiments.
He accused them of not standing up against calls for the genocide of Jews, which he believes fuels a dangerous rise in anti-Semitism.
Netanyahu’s comments extended to the political sphere as well, where he called out pro-Gaza protesters as “useful idiots” manipulated by Iranian leaders.
Protests and Boycotts
Outside, protests continued with demonstrators burning American flags and an effigy of Netanyahu.
Some supporters of Hamas even displayed the group’s flags and wore related attire.
Notably, Rep. Rashida Tlaib attended the address wearing a keffiyeh and held up a sign accusing Netanyahu of genocide.
Several Democrats chose to skip the speech, citing tensions over the ongoing Gaza conflict.
High-profile absences included Vice President Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Security and Future Meetings
In anticipation of large protests, security was heightened with over 200 New York City police officers dispatched to assist Capitol Hill.
Senator John Cornyn criticized the Vice President’s absence, calling it “disgraceful,” while other Republican senators also expressed their disapproval.
Speaker Mike Johnson warned of a strict policy against disruptions in the Capitol.
Netanyahu’s visit includes meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, as well as a scheduled discussion with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
The ongoing protests and political tensions highlight the deep divisions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
