As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympics, there’s been a buzz about the beds in the Olympic Village.
Designed with sustainability in mind, these beds are primarily made of cardboard.
But some rumors have suggested they might have another purpose: to discourage athletes from getting too intimate during the Games.
Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has recently taken to social media to challenge the idea that these cardboard beds are meant to deter sexual activity.
In a video posted on Instagram, McClenaghan, who is gearing up for his Olympic debut, put the bed through a rigorous test.
“I’m at the Paris Olympic Games, and once again, we have these cardboard ‘anti-sex beds’,” he said.
“I tested them last time, and they held up well.
Maybe I wasn’t rigorous enough, though.”
The 25-year-old gymnast jumped, performed handstands, and even did front flips on the bed to prove its durability.
His conclusion? “No, they pass the test. It’s fake, it’s fake news!”
Other Athletes Weigh In
Rhys McClenaghan isn’t the only one testing the beds.
Team GB diver Tom Daley shared his own video on TikTok, showing the bed’s sturdiness by bouncing on it and commenting, “As you can see, they are pretty sturdy.”
Israeli baseball player Ben Wanger also jumped on the bed in a TikTok video, noting, “We actually enjoy sleeping on these beds and think they are a great and sustainable option for future Olympics.”
Although Wanger later removed the video, his initial review was positive.
Mixed Reactions
Not all athletes are impressed with the cardboard beds.
Australian water polo player Tilly Kearns and her teammate Gabi Palm have voiced their discomfort.
Kearns posted on social media about her struggles, saying, “Already had a massage to undo the damage,” and expressed frustration with the bed’s firmness.
In a video, she described the bed as “rock solid” and was disheartened to find that the “soft side” was still quite uncomfortable.
McClenaghan’s Medal Hopes
Despite the bed controversy, McClenaghan is focused on his Olympic goals.
With an impressive track record, including two world championships and three European championships on the pommel horse, he’s hoping to add an Olympic medal to his collection.
